Mike Verweij and Valentijn Driessen expect that the chance that Joey Veerman will be called up by national coach Ronald Koeman during the next international period is small. The two journalists from De Telegraaf say this in the Kick-off podcast.
Veerman has had a disappointing European Championship so far. He did not really impress against Poland and France, and against Austria he was substituted after just over half an hour earlier this week.
At Kick-off, Veerman’s future with the Dutch national team is therefore discussed. “Veerman will of course stay with us now, because Ronald Koeman is not going to send him home,” Driessen refers to the Dutch national team’s European Championship selection.
“Koeman also brought Kenneth Taylor to the side after half an hour, in the match against France. He never called or spoke to them again after that. He probably won’t ignore Joey Veerman if he goes to Real Madrid, but I don’t think that chance is very good,” Driessen continues.
“In any case, Koeman does not forget things so quickly. He has now experienced it for a month and given him two great opportunities. And he was also allowed to raid against France. If you don’t achieve it, it usually means the end of your international career under Ronald Koeman. And it will stay for another two years. That’s not surprising at all: trainers naturally have preferences. And soon all those boys will come back. Wieffer, Timber, Frenkie de Jong, Marten de Roon maybe even… So at such a moment Ronald Koeman won’t see Joey Veerman if you just don’t deliver here.”
Verweij agrees with his colleague’s words. “The next time there are international matches, which will be in September, Joey Veerman will have played this European Championship and he has just started at PSV. And if there are others available, Koeman is certainly not going to call him up.”
Veerman has played thirteen international matches so far, scoring once. With the selection of the Dutch national team, he is currently preparing for the round of 16 of the European Championship against Romania, next Tuesday evening.
