Changes in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga: Teams Prepare for the Coming Season

The final series of the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga between FC Bayern and Alba Berlin is still ongoing. The other 15 clubs, however, have long been working on their teams for the coming season.

What is striking is that so far, changes within the league have predominated. Fresh names from outside are (still) the exception.

The biggest loser at the moment is Veolia Towers Hamburg. The team that finished tenth in the table last season is suddenly headless! Captain Seth Hinrichs (31) and his deputy Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann (34) are moving to the competition.

Hinrichs signed – for more money – with the EWE Baskets Oldenburg until 2026. European Championship hero “WoBo” demanded a new two-year contract, but Towers boss Marvin Willoughby (46) only wanted to extend the center’s contract for one season. So he is heading back south to end his career.

For Hinrichs, however, the move to the north is almost a return. The all-rounder with high leadership qualities has already played for Rasta Vechta (2017-2019) and in Hamburg (2021/2022) under current Oldenburg coach Pedro Calles (40). The Spaniard is known for gathering confidants around him.

“Of course I know him very well and I know that he is a very good player and an absolute professional,” says Calles. “He is a player who does a lot of things that help a team win games. Seth brings a lot of BBL experience and a very high basketball IQ.”

Another plus point for dirty worker Hinrichs: he should have a German passport by the start of the season. His ancestors come from near Oldenburg and emigrated to the USA in 1882. The father of four had already applied for dual citizenship with the Towers, but the process dragged on.

Bad news for the Towers: Not only do they have to build a completely new team for the second time in a row, but they are also missing two important pillars that will pass on the culture that coach Benka Barloschky (36) established in his first season to the newcomers.

In addition, a leadership hierarchy must first be established in the new troops. That can take time…

MBC signs brother of NBA star

Basement child MBC is making use of nearby: Sharpshooter Spencer Reaves (28) is coming to Weißenfels for one season from surprise newcomer Rasta Vechta. With a three-point percentage of 49.2 percent, the brother of NBA star Austin Reaves (26/Los Angeles Lakers) was the best long-range shooter in the league this season.

Also new is winger Ivan Tkachenko (27) from the Ukrainian EuroCup representative BC Prometey Slobozhanske. The new Wolves head coach Janis Gailitis (39) knows Tkachenko from Riga. Prometey found an adopted home in the Latvian capital in 2022 after the start of the Russian war of aggression, took part in the Latvian-Estonian professional league as a guest team in the past two seasons and won the title twice.

Bonn gets new leader

The first reinforcement for Telekom Baskets Bonn also comes from their own league. The athletic “Big” Jonathan Bähre (27/2.08 meters) is moving from Champions League participant MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg with a contract until 2026. There he played his best season to date with 6.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game and a three-point percentage of 33.3 percent.

On Monday, the next important personnel change was made: Darius McGhee (25/USA) is to succeed Harald Frey (27/to Bilbao) and lead the Bonn team in the future. At just 1.75 meters tall, the fast dribbler fits perfectly into the modern BBL pattern for successful point guards.

In the current season, he played in the farm team of NBA club Indiana Pacers. His assistant coach there: BBL veteran Bryce Taylor (37), who himself played at Hardtberg in 2009/2010.

Bonn coach Roel Moors (45): “Darius is supposed to lead the team as point guard. He is extremely fast and is able to make many, even very difficult, shots. He also uses his speed to get to the basket, where he can either finish himself or create for his teammates.”

Bamberg Baskets as an opportunity for Watson-Boye

Master coach Anton Gavel (39) also has his first new player after moving from Ratiopharm Ulm to Bamberg Baskets. His name: Ibrahim Watson-Boye (26/USA). The guard (1.97 meters) played last season in the second-tier Swedish league for Boras Basket and is currently still active for the Ottawa Black Jacks in Canada.

Gavel: “He can be used in several positions and wants to develop further in the BBL and of course prove himself. His game is very versatile and he can provide impulses both offensively and defensively. Of course we are looking for hungry players who see Bamberg as their chance and want to give everything for Freak City.”

Heidelberg: Ersek comes – two veterans leave

Just like his colleague from Oldenburg, Calles, Danny Jansson (44) also relies on tried and tested methods. The new coach of the MLP Academics Heidelberg is therefore bringing Erol Ersek (25) with him from his previous employer, Tigers Tübingen. The Austrian with a German passport signed until 2026.

On the other hand, captain Akeem Vargas (34) will not have his contract extended after two years. Elias Lasisi’s (32/Belgium) contract, which still has a year left, will be terminated due to a clause as it does not fit into Jansson’s new sporting concept.
