Changing room music at the DFB: David Raum gives insights

How do the national players warm themselves up musically before international matches? David Raum gives insights in an interview with SPOX.

The clear definition of roles in the DFB team is one of the great achievements of national coach Julian Nagelsmann – accordingly, Benjamin Henrichs was appointed as music representative in the run-up to the home European Championships. “Benny has created a general playlist with a few songs from everyone. It runs through before every game,” explains David Raum.

How can you imagine the playlist? “German rap by Luciano, UK rap, US rap, lots of hip hop,” says the 26-year-old left-back from RB Leipzig. “That really appeals to everyone.” Really everyone? Does that really appeal to the “yodelers” too? National coach Julian Nagelsmann recently reported that the team is divided into rappers and yodelers – connected by Thomas Müller, who is wonderful with both musical camps.

“I don’t even know who the Jodlers are,” says Raum, laughing. If they do exist, they would only be able to get past the rap-heavy Henrichs playlist if they had their own sound system: “If someone wants to hear something else, they can put headphones in.” In general, however, the music is “not too loud” and “only a little in the background”: “So that you can have a conversation.”

Just like yodeling, “Major Tom” is also missing from the playlist. “It hasn’t been played in the dressing room yet, but I think it’s really cool,” says Raum. Peter Schilling’s cult song from the 80s has recently become an unofficial DFB anthem, and recently it can also be heard in the stadium speakers after goals are scored at home games: “Completely detached from the earth!”
