Yves Klein and sport, what connection? Judo ! Before becoming a world-famous artist, the painter from Nice was a top athlete. In 1947, he discovered what was not yet considered a sporting discipline, but as a method of intellectual education allowing access to self-control. The love of Japan grips him. He even dreams of going there… on horseback.

In 1952, Klein moved to the Kõdõkan Institute in Tokyo for a year and a half to perfect his technique. A year later – he was 25 – he became a 4th dan black belt and, back in Paris, he published The Foundations of Judo published by Grasset. A treatise on judo illustrated with photographs where he performs katas in the company of other judokas…
