Charles Lee: From Celtics Assistant to Future Hornets Head Coach

Former right-hand man of Mike Budenholzer, at the Hawks then at the Bucks, Charles Lee arrived this season with the Celtics, to help Joe Mazzulla. And here he is now one victory away from a new title, after that of 2021…

But the 39-year-old assistant is also one victory away from leaving Boston, as he will lead the Hornets next season. For more than a month, he has been wearing a double hat, which is not easy to manage.

“I contacted Coach (Mike) Brown”, he explains to Andscape. “I remember reading that he was trying to handle both during the Golden State-Sacramento period. I just wanted to hear what he had to say. What advice could he give me when I’m going through the same thing? And he helped me a lot. »

The Hornets during free time

Two years ago, the Kings recruited Mike Brown while the latter was also in the middle of the playoffs campaign, as an assistant to Steve Kerr with the Warriors. A campaign also concluded with the title… against the Celtics, then coached by Ime Udoka, while Joe Mazzulla was still only one of his obscure assistants.

“The most important thing is to focus on the present moment” summarizes Charles Lee. “When I wear my Celtics cap, I am fully engaged. This is where my mind is. When I leave the room, I suddenly have to think about my team, my players, training camp and summer league. We have made good progress.”

During his free time, the future “head coach” mainly sought to build relationships, having lunch with LaMelo Ball and chatting by Zoom with members of his staff. And he won’t have much rest since he will lead the Hornets team in Summer League right after the Finals, to get his bearings as quickly as possible.
