Checo Pérez tried, but once again he didn’t have the luck necessary to perform as expected in the Austrian Grand Prix. The Mexican finished in seventh place, while the winner was George Russell in a final lap that left several surprises.
“Checo” had a good start from eighth place, where he was able to advance two positions although, in return, he found himself involved in multiple contact with Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc.
The most affected was Ferrari, who little by little lost pace and finished at the back of the grid. Although Pérez also reported damage to the pontoon and axle, which forced him to go to the pits and begin, again, an attempt at a comeback.
Why was Checo Pérez sanctioned?
Halfway through the race, Sergio Pérez was called back into the pits but he exceeded the speed allowed in the pit lane, for which he received a five-second penalty that made him drop back once again.
“Checo” found himself in limbo. Too far away to try to overtake Nico Hulkenberg with the 15-seconds, and too far ahead of his closest pursuer to feel threatened.
The excitement of the race came at the front in the final laps. Max Verstappen and Lando Norris engaged in a battle that had everything. Overtaking on the outside, brake locks and manoeuvres to close gaps, until they made contact.

Norris and Verstappen lost a tire each and that put an end to their aspirations for victory. They immediately entered the pits and although the Dutchman was able to continue, the Briton ended up abandoning.

It was at that moment that George Russell took the opportunity to claim his second Formula One victory, followed by Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz to complete the podium.
Sergio Pérez had Hulkenberg within DRS range in the final laps, but was never able to pass the Haas driver and finished seventh.

With this result, the Mexican driver now has six Grand Prix without reaching the podium, since the race in China where he finished third in April.
