Chile is out of the Copa America

Chile said goodbye to the Copa América early after drawing 0-0 against Canada on Saturday, a match that La Roja played with one man less from the 26th minute.

The draw allowed Canada, a debutant in the world’s oldest international tournament, to qualify for the quarterfinals as second in Group A, behind Argentina.

However, Ricardo Gareca’s team left the United States without scoring a goal in three games, recording a draw.

Forced to win to survive, Chile made their task more complicated when their left back Gabriel Suazo was sent off in the 26th minute for a double warning.

The rigorous expulsion of Suazo was part of several complaints from the Chileans towards referee Wilmar Roldán. The biggest one occurred after five minutes, when the Colombian referee overlooked the elbow of Canadian defender Moïse Bombito on Rodrigo Echeverría. VAR was not appealed.

With the departure of Suazo, Chile had to rearrange its starting eleven. Offensive midfielder Darío Osorio was replaced by Thomas Galdames.

Chile, champions in 2015 and 2016, has yet to recover. It has missed the last two World Cups. Its top players, such as all-time top scorer Alexis Sánchez, Arturo Vidal and Bravo, are in the twilight of their careers.
