Chile’s Copa América 2024 Squad Announced by Ricardo Gareca: Absence of Vidal and Medel Sparks Controversy

After his last friendly against Paraguay, where they won 3-0, Ricardo Gareca was ready for the start of the Copa América 2024. That is why this Thursday, June 13, 2024, the Argentine coach presented his list of 26 players who will represent to the Chilean National Team in the tournament that will be played in the United States, where they were already champions in 2015 and 2016. Likewise, the ‘Tigre’ confirmed the absence of Arturo Vidal and Gary Medel due to a technical decision, while the injured Claudio Bravo , Paulo Díaz, Guillermo Maripán and Darío Osorio will arrive without problems at the international competition.

To configure the squad list, the ‘La Roja’ coach made only one change, due to the injury of Felipe Loyola, who was dropped during the last friendly. Nicolás Fernández will take his place, while Benjamín Kuscevic also secured his place in the team. One of the surprises was the inclusion of Esteban Pavez, current Colo-Colo midfielder in the Chilean First Division.

Despite the expectations and rumors about the possible call-up of Vidal and Medel, two experienced players in the Chilean National Team, the Argentine coach chose not to include them in the final list. This decision has generated controversy among Chilean fans, especially because both players were not called up for the friendly against Paraguay during the FIFA date prior to the tournament.

This Conmebol tournament represents Gareca’s first official challenge as head of the Chilean team. Since the ‘Tiger’ took over, he has managed only three games: a 3-0 victory against Albania, a narrow 3-2 defeat against France and the most recent, a resounding 3-0 victory over Paraguay in the Santiago National Stadium. This last match marked the end of the preparation prior to the Copa América, where Chile will face Peru led by Jorge Fossati.

How many times has Chile won the Copa América?

The Chilean team made history by becoming champion of the Copa América on two occasions: 2015 and 2016. Nine years ago, held in their own country, ‘La Roja’ advanced as leader of Group A. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Uruguay 1-0 and then beat Peru 2-1 in the semifinals. In the final against Lionel Messi’s Argentina, he emerged victorious in a penalty shootout.

In the Copa América Centenario, held in the United States, Chile advanced to the quarterfinals as runners-up in Group D. They subsequently defeated Mexico 7-0 in the quarterfinals, before beating Colombia 2-0 in the semifinals. In the final, they again faced Argentina, and, after a goalless draw in regulation time and extra time, ‘La Roja’ took the victory in the penalty shootout 4-2.
