Club Brugge Decides Not to Renew Contract for Eder Balanta

Club Brugge has decided not to continue with Eder Balanta. The midfielder’s contract expired, meaning he can walk out of the Jan Breydel Stadium on a transfer-free basis.

Balanta’s contract expires at Club Brugge at the end of this month and Blauw-Zwart has already announced his retirement. The left-footed defensive midfielder came over from Swiss Basel in the summer of 2019 for around 2.4 million euros.

After a loan to German side Schalke 04, Balanta sporadically crept into the starting team. Last season, the Colombian played in 32 matches across all competitions, scoring once and providing one assist. Now a move to Colombia is an option.

Immediately club after farewell

In his home country, Atlético Nacional has already submitted a proposal to Balanta, according to journalist Juan Pablo Rua Jimenez. The midfielder will not have to wait long for a new challenge. Despite the fact that the midfielder was seen as a useful player at Blauw-Zwart, Club chose not to renew the contract.

In five seasons at the Jan Breydel Stadium, Balanta became Jupiler Pro League champions four times. The 31-year-old Balanta has nine caps for Colombia to his name.

Club Brugge will enter the transfer market next summer. After an impressive comeback, the club still won the national title and thus qualified for the group stage of the Champions League. After the record transfer of Igor Thiago, Club Brugge also has a lot of millions to spend.

Club Brugge reached the semi-finals of the Conference League last season and wants to make an impression in the Champions League next season. However, the Champions League is a different story and Nicky Hayen’s selection could use a major injection of quality.
