Colombian Judoka Luz Adiela Álvarez Receives Death Threats: Calls for Urgent Action

Colombian judoka Luz Adiela Álvarez reported this Tuesday that she received death threats, apparently from criminal gangs that operate in the department of Valle del Cauca (southwest).

“Today my dad received a death threat very serious against my life. They asked him to say goodbye to me because they would kill me,” the 37-year-old athlete said in a statement.

Álvarez, who represented Colombia at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and who has won three Pan American medals, requested immediate help from President Gustavo Petro to whom he asked: “don’t let me die.”

He also requested the help of the Jamundí Mayor’s Office, where their relatives received threats, and the governor of Valle del Cauca, Dilian Francisca Toro.

“The complaint is already in the hands of the authorities, I hope for speed in the investigation to find those responsible for these threats and my right and integrity can be guaranteed”added the athlete.

A The former governor of Valle Clara Luz Roldán joined the judoka’s complaint who asked the president, the Ministry of the Interior and the National Protection Unit (UNP) for protection for the athlete and her family.

“Total rejection of these threats against the life of Luz Adiela Álvareza judoka who has dedicated her life to sport and to representing Jamundí, the Valley and Colombia with pride and passion,” said Roldán.
