Confusion at the handover, elbows in action. And the excellent Czech discipline ended in disappointment

Rome (from our correspondent) – It was a wild race with confusion at the gears and sharp fights. But this time, the Czechs in the team of Matěj Krsek, Lada Vondrová, Vít Müller and Barbora Malíková did not have a medal attack, they were almost four seconds away from the podium with a time of 3:14.24.

Even the national record of 3:11.98 from the Budapest championship would not be enough for a medal in Rome, moreover, the Italians came ahead of the Czechs in the ranking for the Olympics. For the time being, two more countries are nominated for Paris, so the Czechs will have to wait until the end of June so that no one else gets ahead of them.

“The overall time was bad,” said Vondrová, who, like Krsek, was at both of last year’s successes with honesty. Just as hurdler Vít Müller ran at the European Games in Chořov, the newcomer to the team was Barbora Malíková, who is studying in the USA.

“I’m a little disappointed, the time is not what I thought,” admitted Krsek, who traditionally starts the relay. He passed Vondrová in sixth place, who tried to move forward despite the lingering effects of a respiratory illness. But there was a complication during the handover.

“I almost had to stop so that I could pass to Víťa and not cross,” she recounted. The referee places the runners in order 200 meters before the handover.

“And there was a British woman in front of the Lada, if they turned us around, the Lada could run calmly and I didn’t have to push the Briton,” described Müller, who tried to hold off the Belgian Alexander Doom. “But he’s the indoor world champion after all, I didn’t have much strength left,” he admitted.

Nevertheless, he passed the fifth, but in the end, after a fight with the British Emily Newhamová, Malíková fell one place again. “I ran the first 300m well, but that’s not how you play. Then the Brit elbowed me, I wasn’t ready for that and it slowed me down. In the future, I also have to have elbows and hopefully it will be better,” hoped Malíková.

Krsek will start on Saturday at the start of the individual Thursday, Vondrová is seeded straight into the semi-finals. On Sunday, Müller will fight for the semi-finals in the hurdles, Malíková can prepare for the women’s relay, which at the end of the championship will fight for the finals and a place in the Olympics.
