As usual, the 32 seeded players were drawn to their positions. Only the top seed Iga Swiatek and the number two seed Coco Gauff did not have to be drawn. The two ended up in positions 1 and 128 in the tournament tree, respectively, so they could only meet in the final. The new tournament referee Denise Parnell announced that Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil, seeded 20th, had been drawn to position 24 in the tournament tree. So far, so good. But the name of child prodigy Mirra Andreeva suddenly appeared on the official chart at position 24. The 17-year-old is seeded 24, so the technical people had obviously mixed up her seeding position with her position in the table!
Then the drama began: Parnell did not notice the mistake and continued with the other players until she noticed that one spot was left empty. After all, the name Beatriz Haddad Maia was not entered at all, so one spot remained empty.

Parnell and her colleague were visibly confused, the incident also left its mark on the spectators and laughter broke out.
