The Belgian Football Association wants to close the chapter. “There was a thought of having Onana contact Mbappé directly, but that has not happened yet,” says Ruben Van Gucht.

This is what it sounded like in a provocative video that the Belgian Football Association distributed on social media yesterday. The (foreign) media responded critically.
The video was soon taken offline. The Red Devils’ press conference opened today with an apology, and further steps were also considered.
“I was told that the technical staff was quite bored with it,” says Ruben Van Gucht from Germany.
“At one point there was a thought about Amadou Onana contacting Kylian Mbappé directly. As far as I know, that hasn’t happened and it won’t happen.”
The Belgian media will not make it bigger.

The incident seems to pass quickly in the Belgian camp. “The Belgian media did not ask the players any questions about it.”
Van Gucht does see that there has been too little reflection. “The video was recorded a while ago.”
“So there was enough time to do the final editing and to decide when to put it online.”
But will it affect the preparation for the match? “I don’t think it will live a bigger life now,” concludes Ruben Van Gucht.
“Don’t do anything that motivates your opponent”
The analysts in the Sporza studio were also unanimous. “It’s not smart,” says Gert Verheyen. “You shouldn’t do anything that can motivate your opponent.”
“It’s humor, but not good humor,” adds Wesley Sonck. “You give the other team extra material to tackle you.”
Occasional football analyst Sep Vanmarcke shares that opinion. “If it comes from the supporters, such a joke is okay. Doing this as a national football association is not very smart.”
