Critics Slam Memphis Depay’s Performance in Dutch National Team

Johan Derksen and René van der Gijp do not have a good word to say about Memphis Depay. According to analysts, the performance of the striker of the Dutch national team was far below par during the goalless draw against France.

Van der Gijp saw a clear difference between the attackers of France and those of the Dutch team. “Those wingers from France can go in any direction,” he says in Today Inside Oranje. “They go deep, both without the ball and with it. They pass outside and inside. In our vanguard everyone gets the ball, there is no depth at all. There’s never one that says, ‘I’ll sprint and see what happens.’”

Van der Gijp was specifically bothered by Memphis. “He is becoming a kind of Neymar. He decided two years ago: I will no longer go deep without the ball. And maybe that headband is too tight. Then the blood doesn’t flow well,” he says jokingly.

“It’s actually crazy that all those analysts expected a lot from Memphis in the preparation for the European Championship, but he hasn’t played football all year. If we had expected a lot from Harry Kane or Jude Bellingham, I would have said: ‘Forward’,” concludes Van der Gijp.

The Dutch striker also receives fierce criticism from Derksen. “Memphis is the most notable player in the world right now, but not because of his play. With a very arrogant face he wants to take every free kick and corner… And it’s nothing!”
