Cruzeiro Suffers Defeat Away from Home, Struggles Continue in Brazilian Championship

Cruzeiro’s good campaign at the start of the Brazilian Championship is strongly linked to their performance at home, with four victories in the Mineirão. However, away from home, the celestial team has faced difficulties. In yet another attempt to improve their performance as a visitor, the team from Minas Gerais faced several problems and was harmed by Marlon’s expulsion. In this Sunday’s game (23/6), against Bahia at Fonte Nova, in Salvador, for the 11th round of Series A, Cruzeiro suffered a 4-1 defeat.

In the 23rd minute of the second half, Marlon got involved in a ball dispute with Gilberto, getting on top and leaving his foot. After reviewing the move in VAR, referee Paulo Belence Alves dos Prazeres opted to expel the Cruzeiro full-back. The team from Minas Gerais did not perform well, especially in the second half.

Both teams started pressing high, but without creating many opportunities at the beginning. Over time, Cruzeiro improved and had the first real chance with a long shot from Matheus Pereira. In the 13th minute, Gabriel Veron scored for Cruzeiro after dribbling past Gabriel Xavier and shooting into the corner. The goal was initially disallowed for offside, but VAR confirmed the validation.

Bahia only managed to threaten at the end of the first half. In the 34th minute, Jean Lucas forced Anderson to make a great save with a long-range shot. Soon after, Jean Lucas scored with a strong shot after a rebound in the area, but the referee disallowed the goal due to a foul on Cruzeiro’s goalkeeper. Cruzeiro had other chances to expand, with Gabriel Veron failing to dribble past the goalkeeper and Romero shooting wide after entering the area. In the final minutes of the first half, when it looked like Cruzeiro would go into the break with a minimal advantage, Everaldo crossed, the ball deflected and Thaciano stepped in to tie the game.

The second half of the game started off busy, with both teams creating chances. In the ninth minute, Everaldo hit the post with a shot from outside the box. Four minutes later, William made a low cross, and Arthur Viana almost scored with a great shot.

The situation changed in the 23rd minute, when Marlon was sent off after a harsh tackle. With one more player, Bahia intensified the pressure and were rewarded in the 32nd minute: Ademir crossed, Biel cleared it, and Estupiñán scored. Bahia continued to dominate, and Ademir almost expanded, but stopped at Anderson. In the final minutes, Estupiñán scored another and Biel sealed the victory with another goal.

Next Wednesday (26), Cruzeiro takes the field in another direct confrontation in the Brasileirão, where they will face Athletico-PR at Mineirão, in Belo Horizonte, at 7pm. The team remains with 17 points and dropped to seventh place. Internacional overtook the Minas Gerais team by beating Grêmio 1-0 at Couto Pereira, in Curitiba, this Saturday (22/6).
