Cuba’s Olympic Performance in Beijing 2008: A Look Back at History

Cuba regressed in Beijing 2008, where boxing did not win any gold medal in four finals

The XXIX Olympic Games in Beijing 2008, held from August 8 to 24, had such a powerful magnet that it attracted 10,042 athletes from 204 national committees, competing in 302 events in 28 sports.

And they became the most expensive event in Olympic history, exceeding $44 billion.

When we now wrote this work we consulted the official site again (olympics.com), in which it appears that Cuba won 2 gold medals-9 silver-11 bronze=22 in total/20th place.

One element may sound contradictory: official medals are based on original results and do not reflect subsequent analysis of anti-doping samples.

There are sites, to mention a few, such as abc.com, marca.com y bbc.com, which show 2-11-11=24; place 28.

And in this skein we are going to stay with what is reflected in wikipedia.org: 3-10-16=29/19no., just adding one more bronze (17 instead of 16). This brings us to one more in the total (not 29, but 30), all of which will be justified a little further down.

Remembering

And in the case of our compatriots, the most favored was the hammer player Yipsi Moreno, who had initially placed second and became Olympic champion, due to the disqualification of the Belarusian Axana Miankova.

Let’s remember the background of the two previous editions. In Athens 2004 we achieved 27 medals, distributed in nine gold-seven silver-11 bronze/11no. place. And in Sydney 2000 the harvest was 11-11-7=29/9no.

The three gold medals in Beijing 2008 went to the Greco-Roman wrestler Mijaín López (then 120 kilograms), his first of the four up to this point); Dayron Robles (110 meters hurdles) and, as we already wrote, Yipsi Moreno (hammer throw).

Yipsi Moreno had finished with a silver medal and. When the anti-doping tests were revised again, she later became an Olympic champion. / Dayron Robles was invincible.

Among the most significant notes are the following: boxing did not win any gold for the first time since Munich 1972 (its four finalists could not achieve it); the baseball team finished second after losing to South Korea; and China (29-17-23=69) finished above the United States (25-22-24=71).

Now, as we have been doing to pay very fair tribute to the protagonists in this series of the Olympic Games, we leave you with all the Cuban medalists.
