Cycling – Tour de Suisse (E5): Yates wins and consolidates his first place

Adam Yates consolidated his leader’s jersey by winning the 5th stage of the Tour de Suisse, this Thursday twenty-four hours after taking first place in the general classification. The Briton beat his teammate Joao Almeida at the end of a dream day for the UAE-Emirates team.

A day later, Adam Yates had not tasted the pleasure of raising his arms for five months. Competing in the Tour of Oman, the British climber won the 5th and final stage, at the top of Jabal Al Akhdhar, and at the same time took the final victory. The winner of the 1st stage of the last Tour de France, in the streets of Bilbao with this attack in the last descent to which only his brother Simon Yates managed to respond, has not yet won this Tour de Suisse of which he is the ‘one of the great favourites. On the other hand, the leader of the UAE Emirates team in this event took a big step this Thursday during the 5th stage (Ambri – Cari, 148.7 km) by winning on the occasion of the second arrival at the summit from the start.

Second the day before (behind the Norwegian Traeen), but already ahead of all his rivals for the final victory in this Tour de Suisse, Yates had not lost everything nevertheless, since he had donned the leader’s yellow jersey. On Thursday, he did better by returning to success, his first since his victory on February 14 at the Tour of Oman. The winner of the Tour de Romandie last season took the opportunity to consolidate his first place and increase his lead over his teammate Joao Almeida, 2nd Thursday 35 seconds behind the Briton during this stage which saw UAE Emirates sign a superb double at the end a dream day for the Emirati team, definitely a step above everyone else on this Tour de Suisse, but also over Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), 3rd and now relegated to 1’11 behind the leader. The hero of the day made the difference in two stages on the last climb. His first attack, before the red flame, did not make a difference, unlike his second acceleration, 800 meters from the line. Even Almeida, although in great form, could not follow.
