Cyclist Skujiņš finishes in 19th place in the first stage of the Tour de France / Article

In the first stage, the cyclists, overcoming seven categorized climbs, measured 206 kilometers.

After the first five kilometers, a small group of cyclists tried to break away from the peloton and initially failed to gain more than five seconds, but after less than 20 kilometers the breakaway group was a minute ahead of the peloton. After less than 50 kilometers, the lead of the breakaway group increased to four minutes.

As the final 100 kilometers began, the peloton began to catch up with the breakaway group. About 15 kilometers to the finish line, only two cyclists of the “dsm-firmenich PostNL” unit remained in the breakaway, which the peloton failed to catch up with.

Bardet was the first to cross the finish line, and Dutch cyclist Frank van den Broek was the second, both covering the distance in five hours, seven minutes and 22 seconds. On the other hand, the Belgian Wout van Aart (“Visma-Lease a Bike”), who was at the head of the peloton, was third, losing five seconds.

Skujiņš (“Lidl-Trek”) finished with the big group and was five seconds behind the winner, while Neiland (“Israel – Premier Tech”) lost 18 minutes and 46 seconds.

Cyclists will start the first four stages in Italy, the fourth of which will already end in France.

Two flat stages will follow before the seventh stage will feature the first individual ride in the vineyards of Burgundy. The next two stages will also be on relatively flat terrain, and in the second of them, before the first holiday, about one-sixth of the distance, or 32 kilometers, will have to be measured on gravel sectors.

The distance will then lead south through the Massif Central and the Pyrenees, before returning to the Alps, where stages 18 and 19 will finish in the mountains. The penultimate stage will also be in the mountains, but the 111th “Tour de France” cycling race in history will end on July 21 with a 34-kilometer individual ride from Monaco to Nice, the champion being determined, perhaps, only in the last stage.

Due to security and logistical concerns related to the 2024 Paris Olympics, the French Tour will end in Nice instead of Paris.

During the entire bike ride, cyclists will cover 3,492 kilometers with a total of 52,230 meters of ascent.

Skujiņš is starting his sixth “Tour de France” cycling race, while Neyland is participating in the prestigious cycling race for the fourth time.

For the last two years in a row, the Danish cyclist Jonas Wingegord has been undefeated in the Tour de France.
