Dan Hurley Chooses UConn Over Lakers: A $70 Million Decision

“This entire experience is humbling,” Hurley said in a statement released by the Huskies. “Ultimately, I am extremely proud of the championship culture we have created in Connecticut.” The focus now is on improving as a team and aiming for the next titles.

Hurley won the college title with the Huskies in the last two years in a dominant manner (68-11 record). That’s why he landed on the radar of the Lakers, who, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, wanted to make him one of the highest-paid NBA coaches with a six-year, $70 million contract. Instead, he will now hold talks with UConn about a contract extension – including a hefty pay rise.

According to “Woj,” Hurley was “extremely impressed” by the Lakers’ decision-makers, including owner Jeanie Buss and GM Rob Pelinka, who presented him with a “tantalizing vision.” However, he decided to join the Huskies on Sunday.

The Lakers will now turn to other candidates: the goal is to present the new head coach by the end of the month. The current list of candidates includes assistant coach James Borrego of the New Orleans Pelicans, and there have also been reports of interest in current TV expert and podcaster JJ Redick.
