Telekom Baskets Bonn have found a successor for Harald Frey, who is moving to Bilbao: Darius McGhee will move to the 2023 Champions League winners in the summer.

“Darius was courted by many European teams,” assures Baskets sports director Savo Milovic: “The fact that he chose us speaks for the mutual trust that he and Roel Moors have in each other. We were already interested in him last season. However, after his successful college career, he wanted to try his luck first in the Indiana Pacers’ farm team.”

McGhee is considered a fast and dangerous point guard who comes to the basketball league after a college career filled with numerous awards and a guest appearance in the NBA G League with the Indiana Mad Ants. The 1.75 meter tall American signed a one-year contract with the Baskets.

“He is a family man who has already announced that he wants to travel to Bonn two weeks earlier than usual to settle in here with his girlfriend,” explains Milovic. Head coach Roel Moors adds: “Darius will lead the team as point guard. He is extremely fast and is able to make many, even very difficult, shots. He also uses his speed to get to the basket, where he can either finish himself or create for his teammates.”

Bonner Connection in Indianapolis

The move was also made possible by a Bonn connection in Indianapolis. The G-League team that McGhee played for was coached by Bryce Taylor, who was with the Telekom Baskets during his active time from 2009 to 2010.

Bonn fans can expect a player who will give his all in every game.

“I chose the Baskets because the whole of Bonn supports the team incredibly,” said McGhee about his new home: “It offers me the opportunity to experience a special season with a great organization. The Bonn fans can expect a player who will give his all in every game. Someone who is really committed to giving something to the city of Bonn.”

With the signing of McGhee, it is also clear that Glynn Watson Jr. will not return to the Baskets. Watson Jr. wore the Baskets’ jersey 57 times last season. Across four competitions, he averaged 13.1 points, 3.9 assists and 2.7 rebounds. Where he will go from here is unclear.
