An American data analysis company revised its prediction of the Korean national team’s gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics by lowering it from 9 to 8.

Gracenote, a data analysis company under Nielsen in the U.S., predicted Korea to collect a total of 29 medals (8 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and 16 bronze medals) in its own medal predictions on the 26th (local time), 30 days before the opening of the Paris Olympics. It was predicted that it would rank 10th overall this year.

Compared to Gracenote’s previous prediction, the number of gold medals decreased, and the number of other medals increased. Gracenote predicted in April, 100 days before the opening, that Korea would win a total of 24 medals, including 9 gold, 4 silver, and 11 bronze medals.

Although the number of gold medals has decreased, the number is rather high compared to the goal of the Korean Sports Council. The Korea Sports Council has set a goal of 5 gold medals and 15th overall ranking for this competition. However, the Korea Sports Council also expects to achieve better results than previously expected. At the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics D-30 Media Day event held at the Jincheon Athletes’ Village in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province on the 26th, the Sports Council pledged to achieve better results than the announced goals, saying, “All sports are currently on the rise.”

Gracenote did not even disclose award predictions for each event. Korea, which has long been considered a powerhouse, will challenge for gold medals in archery, taekwondo, fencing, and badminton, where key athletes such as Ahn Se-young are strong.

Meanwhile, Gracenote predicted that the United States, not China, would take first place overall. Gracenote predicted that the United States would win a total of 123 medals, including 37 gold medals, and take first place in the overall rankings, beating China (36 gold medals, 87 medals in total). The host country, France, received an optimistic forecast of winning 29 gold medals, the third most after the two countries. France won a total of 33 medals, including 10 gold medals, at the last Tokyo Olympics, but Gracenote predicted that France would win a total of 56 medals at this year’s Games.

The Paris Olympics will open on July 26 and close on August 11. Korea sends up to 142 athletes to 21 sports.
