David Goffin Secures First Career Title on Grass at ATP Challenger 125 in Ilkley

David Goffin (ATP 109) was delighted on Saturday to have won the ATP Challenger 125 tournament on grass in Ilkley, worth 148,625 euros. The 33-year-old Liégeois, seeded N.4, beat the Frenchman Harold Mayot (ATP 125), 22, in the final, 6-4 and 6-2 after 1h21 of play.

“It wasn’t an easy match,” he said after his victory. “There was a swirling wind and the level of play was not as good as the rest of the week. You had to stay calm, focused on what had to be done. The first set was key. I gave myself a break in advance, before conceding my throw-in at 4-3. Fortunately, I was able to break back to pocket this set. And I think that for him, this led to a certain frustration, because it was not easy to hit the ball well in such conditions. It was easier for me to manage and it showed at the end, during the last two, three games. He was no longer in the game and I was able to break away to close the match with a good service game. »

This is the first title on grass in the career of David Goffin, who had already played finals in Rosmalen, in 2015, and in Halle, in 2019. The Liégeois is the second Belgian player to win in Ilkley, after Zizou Bergs in 2022.

“It’s nice to win a title on grass,” he continued. “It was a very nice week. I had already obtained very good results on this surface, but never won yet. And there, I finally have a trophy. This confirms that I am a good grass player, although I feel like I can play well on all surfaces. »
