Decision made! Novak Djokovic starts in Wimbledon after knee surgery

Despite injury concerns, Novak Djokovic will compete in the grass court Grand Slam in Wimbledon. The 37-year-old Serb is in the main draw, which was drawn on Friday, so his participation is considered certain. The Scotsman Andy Murray, who has also been injured recently, will also compete.

Djokovic had left his participation open until the last minute. “I will only play if I am able to go far and fight for the title,” he told the BBC. “I am not here to just play a few rounds. Only if I know that I can play at my maximum or close to it will I play.”

After withdrawing before the quarter-finals of the French Open earlier this month, Djokovic underwent knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. His knee is developing “in the right direction,” said Djokovic, who trained on grass on Monday with a bandage on the injured joint: “It’s getting better every day. I’m not giving 100 percent yet, but hopefully that will come in the next few days.”

The seven-time Wimbledon winner had recently reached the final of the most famous tennis tournament five times in a row, losing only to Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in 2023. With another victory, he would catch up with record champion Roger Federer (eight titles).
