If the 24-team Euro formula introduced for the first time in 2016 has logically inflated the total goals scored, the number of goals per match is revealing. While it has long been close to three goals scored per match – an average never reached during the group stages in the 21st century, the record being 2.71 in 2000 -, the group stage ultimately displays a mixed score, due to ‘an unproductive third day. With 2.25 goals per match, the German edition has so far the sixth lowest average over the last seven European Championships. A figure which does not, however, prevent certain offensive tendencies from being identified, here they are pell-mell.
