Borussia Dortmund lost the Champions League final against Real Madrid and was devastated. The Germans had to travel home knowing that they could have achieved much more. The reactions from the BVB camp around a deeply disappointed Mats Hummels.

The next second I feel disappointed and empty. We played a great game and perhaps we deserved a little more. We showed the whole world that we believe that we’re not here to play a final, but to win a final. Real then had the killer instinct that we simply lacked today. That’s why they deserved to be Champions League winners.”
Mats Hummels: “That was more than equal, we played a great game. That sounds stupid, but I’m really proud of the team. We played with courage and heart, with footballing class. We missed the chance to score. Then Madrid struck, as they have done for 100 years. Herrmann Gerland once said: Luck is always skill. And we were lucky in this Champions League season, but not today. That hurts.”
Hummels when asked whether this was his last game for BVB due to his expiring contract: “It feels strange not knowing. I have no idea how things will continue, what will happen. That will all be decided in the next few weeks.” Hummels had previously said that ending his career was the least likely option.
