Memphis Depay will be in the starting line-up for the Dutch team against Austria tomorrow evening, national coach Ronald Koeman said on Monday evening. The national coach has not heard much of a ‘national discussion’ about the striker.

“I have no doubts about him at all,” says Koeman. “Of course it can and must be better, but there is also a history of competition rhythm. Memphis will have to grow in the tournament just like all of us.”

Wout Weghorst, who made a good impression at the European Championships and says he is close to a starting spot, will most likely have to settle for a place on the bench against Austria.

Brobbey fit, Zirkzee sick

Koeman also had good news to report about Brian Brobbey. The Ajax striker has been struggling with a hamstring injury throughout the European Championship, but is now fully fit, according to the national coach.

Another striker has been a question mark since yesterday: Joshua Zirkzee is ill. “He is doing better now,” says Koeman. “Yesterday he was not well, he had a mild fever and did not train. Just like this morning, by the way. He is now in the hotel, we will see if he can be there tomorrow.”

If Zirkzee is deemed fit enough, he will be part of the match selection against Austria. “Not to start, but perhaps as a substitute, yes,” Koeman confirms. “If he feels good, he’s basically on the bench.”

Spain not unbeatable

Now that qualification for the knockout phase is close for the Dutch team, Koeman is also looking beyond his own group at this European Championship.

“You want to win every match and if you can finish first in your group, that is of course the best,” he says. “In my view, there are not many real favorites for the overall victory. Perhaps Spain makes the best impression, but that is based on one or two games. But they are not unbeatable either.”
