Detroit fires coach and pays him $65 million

By parting ways with Monty Williams, the Detroit Pistons will see him pay his last three years of contract for a total of $65 million on Wednesday.

In one year on the Pistons bench, Monty Williams will have pocketed no less than 78 million dollars. A salary that would make Kylian Mbappé pale and yet it is the amount that the former Suns coach will earn. Fired after just one season in Detroit, he recovered his salary for the five years remaining on his contract. Including his salary received during the 2023-2024 season, he received nearly $80 million.

But the 52-year-old coach, who had signed the largest contract in NBA history for a coach, did not live up to expectations in Michigan by finishing with the worst record in the league (14 wins for 68 defeats) while tying the record for the number of consecutive defeats with 28 losses in a row. Voted coach of the year in 2022 in Phoenix, he reached the NBA finals with the Arizona franchise the previous year against the Bucks.
