Detroit Pistons Fire Head Coach Monty Williams After Worst Season in NBA

The Detroit Pistons are the worst team of the past NBA season. This now has consequences for the coach.

The Detroit Pistons have parted ways with head coach Monty Williams after just one season.

The basketball team from the US state of Michigan was the worst team in the NBA last season with just 14 wins and 68 losses. Williams signed a six-year contract worth $78.5 million a year ago and was the best-paid coach in the league at the time. In addition to the Pistons, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers are also currently looking for coaches.

For Williams, the dismissal is the low point of a bizarre development. In 2021, he was head coach of the Phoenix Suns in the NBA finals and squandered a 2-0 lead against the Milwaukee Bucks. In 2022, however, he was voted Coach of the Year by a wide margin. In 2023, he had to leave Phoenix and now, just one year later, Detroit too.
