Pavlovic misses the European Championship – Nagelsmann nominates BVB professional after

Bitter news for the DFB: A few days before the opening match against Scotland, Aleksandar Pavlovic has to cancel his participation in the home European Championship. National coach Julian Nagelsmann therefore has to re-plan – and has already nominated a replacement.

National player Aleksandar Pavlovic will miss the European Football Championship. The youngster from FC Bayern was recently absent due to an infection. The fact that national coach Julian Nagelsmann nominated Emre Can as a replacement comes as a surprise. The Dortmund player had just been complaining.

The external conditions were ideal. The sun was shining, the sky was a brilliant blue. But it was no use, the appointment for the planned official photo of the German national football team had to be cancelled at short notice because one player was missing. But Alexandar Pavlovic, who was the person in question, will not be there for the rescheduled appointment either. The youngster from FC Bayern, who has been in Munich since the weekend with tonsillitis, will miss the entire European Championship.

National coach Julian Nagelsmann has nominated Emre Can from Borussia Dortmund to replace the 18-year-old Pavlovic. The 43-time national player and 2017 Confederations Cup winner is expected at the team base camp in Herzogenaurach on Wednesday. “We want another number six in the squad and have therefore decided to nominate Emre Can. He immediately expressed his enthusiasm and willingness to join the team,” said Nagelsmann. “We wanted to have another player in the squad who has played a lot of games and who knows how to deal with the pressure. He can fulfill the profile that we need now.”

Pavlovic initially completed his preparations with the national team in the training camp in Weimarer Land and then with DFB partner Adidas in Herzogenaurach, and made his international debut in the 0-0 international match against Ukraine in Nuremberg. After the final test match before the start of the European Championships at home, the 2-1 win over Greece in Mönchengladbach, Pavlovic was unable to join the team due to an infection.

Emre Can: first disappointment and criticism

Can’s late nomination comes as a surprise, as he had not been called up since his 43rd international match, the 2-1 win against France under interim coach Rudi Völler last September. Nagelsmann had omitted the Dortmund player for both the trip to the USA in October 2023 and the games against Turkey and Austria in November 2023. Only two players from Dortmund, Niclas Füllkrug and Nico Schlotterbeck, were included in the European Championship squad – with Can, there are now three BVB professionals.

At the end of May, Can made no secret of his disappointment at not being considered for the European Championships in an interview with Bild. “I had hoped that I would still be there. But in the end I could imagine that I wouldn’t be part of the squad,” Can said. He added that he would respect Nagelsmann’s decision, however – and said: “Nevertheless, my career in the national team is far from over. I hope that I will be there again in the future.”

These are the group opponents of the German team

First Scotland, then Hungary and finally Switzerland: the German national team faces tough tasks in the group phase of the European Championship. Who makes the difference between the teams and how are they currently performing? An overview of the group opponents.

Can had not received a personal rejection from Nagelsmann, which he criticized. “I would have expected that. I played regularly for the national team and was often part of the team. It would have been nice to have at least been briefly informed about the non-nomination in a personal conversation,” said Can.

Emre Can is now there sooner than expected. In the strict hierarchy of the DFB team, however, he now takes on the backup role of Munich’s Pavlovic. Toni Kroos and Robert Andrich are set in the number six position. Pascal Groß is the first substitute. Not considering Goretzka again was a continuation of Nagelsmann’s uncompromising personnel idea. Goretzka had recently posted a vacation photo from Norway, and his ousting had hit him hard.

Bad luck for Pavlovic in the national team

“I think it’s a real shame for Pavlo. He will stay positive,” said Pavlovic’s Bayern teammate Jamal Musiala on Wednesday afternoon in Herzogenaurach. “We will talk to him in the next few days.” Pavlovic did not play a major role in Nagelsmann’s plans for the opening match against Scotland on Friday (9 p.m./ZDF/Magenta TV) in Munich.

This continues the young Bayern pro’s streak of bad luck with the German team. Pavlovic had already had to cancel a possible debut in March for the matches in France (2-0) and against the Netherlands (2-1) due to tonsillitis. In Herzogenaurach he recently announced that he would consider an operation this summer due to the recurring problems.

At the first training camp in Blankenhain at the end of May, Pavlovic joined team training a few days late. He then made his international debut as a substitute in the 0:0 draw against Ukraine in Nuremberg at the beginning of last week. After his strong debut season with Bayern, Pavlovic decided to pursue a career in the Germany jersey. He could also play international matches for Serbia.
