Novak Djokovic advanced to the quarterfinals on Monday

On Monday, Novak Djokovic showed once again why he is still a force to be reckoned with, even at the age of 37. The 24-time Grand Slam winner looked like a sure loser in the fourth set of the French Open round of 16 against Francisco Cerundolo, but managed to turn the match against the Argentinian around thanks to an almost inexplicable improvement in performance and thus moved into the round of the last eight in Paris.

“I was maybe three or four points away from being eliminated,” said Djokovic, who had already gone five sets against Lorenzo Musetti in the third round, after the match. Nevertheless, his fabulous comeback was not the number one topic of conversation after the match, as Djokovic was obviously struggling with knee problems during the match.

“I had minor knee problems for a few weeks, but it wasn’t too bad. Then I slipped in the second set and was in pain,” explained Djokovic, who hadn’t made any impression on Court Philippe-Chatrier and was even considering giving up. “I took a lot of painkillers. At the end of the fourth set they started to work.”

Djokovic had no problems against Ruud last year

On Tuesday, Djokovic will undergo a number of tests to determine the severity of his injury. It is not yet certain whether the industry leader will be able to play his quarter-final match against Casper Ruud on Wednesday. “I don’t know what it will be like tomorrow or the day after and whether I will be able to go on the court,” said the Serb.

Last year, Djokovic prevailed in the final against Ruud in three sets, and the world number one leads the head-to-head 5-1. However, the Norwegian won the last duel between the two around two months ago in Monte Carlo.
