Domestic violence: Trial against Alexander Zverev discontinued without verdict

The trial against German tennis pro Alexander Zverev for alleged bodily harm has ended without a verdict. The Tiergarten district court in Berlin announced that the proceedings had been discontinued on the third day. The termination of the proceedings was accompanied by a fine of 200,000 euros. There was therefore no conviction.

The public prosecutor, Zverev’s defense and his ex-girlfriend as co-plaintiff agreed to this way of ending the proceedings, according to the court’s statement. Both sides wanted to resolve the conflict peacefully. The agreement to pay a fine does not constitute an admission of guilt. Zverev is still considered innocent, according to a statement from his lawyers.

In the indictment, the 27-year-old was accused of pushing his former girlfriend Brenda Patea against a wall and choking her with both hands during a heated argument in May 2020. The district court therefore issued a penal order against Zverev in October 2023 and imposed a fine of 450,000 euros.

Since Zverev subsequently lodged an appeal against the penalty order, the case went to trial in the district court. His defense rejected the accusation in the proceedings that began on May 31. The accusation was based only on allegations, was not reliable and contradictory, said Zverev’s lawyer at the time. Zverev wanted to shorten the proceedings, particularly in the interests of his children, according to a recent statement from his lawyers.

According to a court spokeswoman, Zverev must pay a fine of 200,000 euros in return for the proceedings being dropped. Of this, 150,000 euros would go to the state treasury and 50,000 to a fund for charitable organizations.

Zverev himself was not present at the proceedings. The tennis pro is in the semifinals of the French Open in Paris; his opponent is the Norwegian Casper Ruud. It is the fourth time that Zverev has reached the semifinals of the Grand Slam tournament. He has not won to date.
