Dominican Davis Cup Team Aims for Promotion to World Group II in Paraguay

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Dominican Davis Cup team will seek promotion to World Group II in Asunción, Paraguay from June 17 to 22 of this year.

The tournament, to be held in Paraguay, will be at the International Tennis Club, in the city of Luque, an outdoor clay surface.

The Dominican team is made up of tennis players Roberto Cid (racket one), Peter Bertran (racket two), Matteo Iaquinto (racket three), Alejandro Gandini and Enmanuel Muñoz, 4 and 5. Jhonny Berrido will be the captain.

Nine teams will compete in Americas Group III in 2024: Bahamas, Bermuda, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Jamaica and Paraguay.

The nine nations will be divided into two groups: a group of four teams (Group A) and a group of five teams (Group B). The two teams that finish first in each group will be promoted with the nation that finishes in third place.

The nation finishing last in Group B will be relegated with the nation finishing in eighth place.

The tournament gives three promotions to World Group II, and two relegations to Group IV. Four teams stay in the same place.

The information was provided by Sergio Tobal, vice president of the Dominican Tennis Federation (Fedotenis), who clarified why Nick Hardt, the first national racket player, will not be able to be present in this Davis Cup.

“Nick, our first racket will play the Wimbledon qualifiers, so he will not be able to be present, however, we must say that we are going with a good core of players, among them Roberto Cid, the third best ranked in Group III, and Peter Bertran, the best racket two of the event, so our expectations are very high for our delegation to seek promotion to Group II,” said Tobal.

The national team travels to Asunción this Friday. Practices will be on Saturday and the captains meeting on Sunday. The tournament starts on Monday, June 17.

“Our players are in good health and condition, since some played in the M15 Santo Domingo, and Roberto Cid is currently playing in an event in Lima, Peru,” said Tobal.
