Dominican Republic Shines at Junior Pan American Judo Cup, Securing Gold and Bronze Medals

SANTO DOMINGO. Victoria Ramírez Peguero won the gold medal and Luisa Villanueva won the bronze on Monday in the Junior Pan American Judo Cup that awarded points for classification to the Pan American Games in that category that will take place in Asunción, Paraguay next year.

The contest, which concluded on Monday, was held at the Sports Center I of the Videna High Performance Center in the San Luis District, in Lima, Peru. The Quisqueyan representation made the trip thanks to the support of the Olympic Solidarity program and the Ministry of Sports.

Ramírez Peguero won gold by beating Renata Sandoval, from Mexico, in the -70 kilo final, who won the silver medal.

In the semifinal, the Dominican judoka dispatched Zoyla Nevado, from Peru. The bronze was shared by Ignacia Mayorga, from Chile, and Heydi Santillana, from Colombia.

In the weight -57 kilos, the Dominican Luisa Villanueva Mota won the bronze after losing in the semifinal against the Brazilian Bianca Reis, who won the gold by defeating Isidora Palma, from Costa Rica, in the final.

The other bronze went to the Chilean Isidora Palma.

Villanueva Mota beat Martina Morena, from Chile, in the round of 16, and in the quarterfinals she dispatched Dylzhat Raskeviichus, from France.

The also Dominicans Dany Manuel Castro, at -60 kilos; Carla Tolentino, at -48 kilos, and Carlos Pérez Jiménez, at -81 kilos, occupied fifth place in their weights, while Moisés Ozuna, at -73 kilos, and Pablo Corniell, at -66 kilos, were in seventh places. .

Selection ranked fourth

The Dominican Republic finished in fourth place in the standings of the Junior Pan American Judo Cup where they won one gold and one bronze, in which a total of 132 athletes from 14 countries took part.

Brazil, with 10 gold medals, seven silver and six bronze, took first place, followed by Mexico, with one gold, one silver and part of the bronze, and Colombia was third, with one gold and four bronze.

The event in Lima, Peru, is the third organized by the Pan American Judo Confederation for qualification to the Asunción event. The next contest, of the five that remain, will take place in the country on the 9th and 10th of next August.
