Dominicano Solidario Association Launches Initiative to Bring Baseball and Softball Field to Cantù, Province of Como

Despite some timid attempts, baseball has never managed to gain the space it deserves in the province of Como. A real shame if you consider that the Milanese hinterland is one of the areas with the highest concentration of playing fields in all of Italy with about ten “diamonds” and a large number of teams. The Dominicano Solidario association has now relaunched the challenge of creating a baseball and softball field in Cantù, which was inaugurated last Saturday at the Vighizzolo sports center, in the presence of the reconfirmed councilor for public funding Matteo Ferrari.

“Our cultural and sports association was born to contribute to the integration of Dominican citizens who live in Cantù, but also beyond – explains the president of Dominicano Solidario Ermi Esteves -. In the city there are about one hundred and ten Dominicans, but if we talk about the entire province of Como we rise to nine hundred compatriots. A consistent and well-integrated community. Our goal as an association is to bring together all these people to enhance the culture of our country and share it with Italians. And baseball and softball, the national sports of the Dominican Republic, are an integral part of this culture. We are asking the Municipality for a land that can host a playing field because our two teams, despite being very competitive, have always played away on the fields of Milan, in particular Desio. If we had a diamond in Cantù, we could also introduce these sports to Italian kids as an opportunity for fun and cultural exchange. We want to do the same with two other pastimes of our community, basketball, already very popular in Cantù, and the game of dominoes and with cultural initiatives such as film, music and folklore festivals.»

The creation of a baseball field in Cantù would give young Italians and non-Italians the unrepeatable opportunity to learn baseball and softball at a high level: «In our teams there are players who have taken tryouts for American professional teams – says the vice president of the association and coach Jesus Garcia -. Consequently, we will offer adults, boys and girls and students the opportunity to learn these exciting sports disciplines in the best possible way with very competent coaches.”
