Donovan Mitchell on the Verge of Signing Extension with Cleveland Cavaliers

Under contract until 2025 (with a “player option” in 2026), Donovan Mitchell has been the subject of rumors for many months. Without an extension, it was rumored that the Cleveland Cavaliers were seriously considering his trade. But they obviously won’t need to exchange it…

According to journalist Marc Stein, the former Utah Jazz player could extend for three years with the Ohio franchise. It would be a deal worth $151 million, with “player option” pour 2028.

Why not sign an extension directly for $208 million over 4 years? Because in 2027, he could get an even bigger check thanks to his 10 years spent in the NBA (35% max). A choice therefore above all financial.

For the Cavs, such a deal represented a relief. After the XXL investment to bring in Mitchell, Cleveland would succeed in its bet by keeping him over the long term. Then this extension could lead to reflections on rebuilding the workforce around him andEvan Mobley.

We are thinking in particular of a possible trade of Darius Garland. In the long term, I find it difficult to envisage a viable collaboration between Donovan Mitchell and Garland. An exchange of the 24-year-old talent could therefore become a serious option.
