Three baseball games were played on Sunday.

Dornbirn. The last day of play for the Dornbirn Indians against the Hard Bulls did not go according to plan. After the heavy rain last week, baseball was played on Sunday in dry and partly sunny conditions, somewhat surprisingly. The two originally scheduled games were on the program, but the game that had been postponed in Hard in April due to darkness also had to be completed.

The Bulls were able to tie the abandoned game in which the Indians were ahead by one run, but the Indians then won after great hits from Paul Kerle and Chris Squires. A total of 16 innings, spread over two days (in April and early June), were needed to determine a winner.

In the first full game, the Indians were already leading 12:2 and were close to winning under the mercy rule (note: if a team is leading by ten or more runs after seven innings, the game is called off early), but when a ball bounced off an uneven surface in the ground just before it could be caught, nothing went right for the Indians and the Bulls caught up one run after the other and the Indians couldn’t do anything else. In the end, Lukas Bickel secured a 16:13 victory for the Bulls with a home run in the tenth inning. “An extremely painful defeat for us, as we were unable to secure the victory that was so close to our grasp,” said Wolfgang Pschorr, the Indians’ sporting director.

The last game of the day was a pitcher’s duel. Both Kelvis Palma and Randy Cuentas dominated the opposing batters, with Palma having the Indians better under control than his counterpart on this day. After two dominant games for the Indians against the Bulls, Cuentas did not have his best day and was unable to help his team to a win on this day. The Bulls also won the last game of the day 6-3.

The Indians wanted to win at least two of three games, but neither Coach Kush nor his players are satisfied with just one win. “In order to continue to secure one of the playoff spots, a clear improvement in the performance of the offense, but also defense, is necessary in the coming weeks,” concluded Pschorr.
