The reporter kicked off the press moment with Memphis Depay and Dumfries by asking a rather remarkable question to Memphis, who then expressed his incomprehension. Stekelenburg then turned to Dumfries. The wing defender had a starting place in the first two European Championship matches, but was kept aside as a precaution against Austria. “Of course you always want to play, so it is never fun to sit on the bench,” said the 55-time international.

Dumfries has had a difficult season at Internazionale. The team from Milan was crowned champion of the Serie A, but Dumfries was not uncontroversial, partly due to injuries. “I had a different season in terms of fitness compared to previous years, so it was a new situation for me. In that respect, I just have to monitor very well and communicate well with the medical staff and trainer. We did that before the tournament,” said Dumfries. Ronald Koeman ultimately made the decision to keep his defender on the bench against Austria.
However, Dumfries’ explanation did not satisfy Stekelenburg. The journalist had asked the international whether he had a ‘groin expert’ flown in. Stekelenburg then asked again. “No, because I don’t have any complaints with my groin,” said Dumfries, who could not contain his laughter. Memphis also responded with surprise to Stekelenburg’s question. “Where did you get that information? Received bad information,” the attacker said. According to Stekelenburg, ‘even’ Koeman talked about a painful groin, but according to Dumfries that is not the case. “It was my hamstring. No, I did not have a hamstring expert flown in.”
Dumfries is fit enough to start against Romania. The meeting in the eighth finals is scheduled for Tuesday evening. Kick-off in Munich is at 6 p.m.
