The substitutes of the Dutch national team won 6-1 against TSV Havelse on Wednesday afternoon, reports Martijn Krabbendam of Voetbal International. Havelse is an amateur club that plays in the Regionalliga Nord. The Dutch team played the practice match to allow substitutes to gain rhythm.
Wout Weghorst and Micky van de Ven both scored two goals. Brian Brobbey and Jeremie Frimpong were responsible for the other goals. The position of the Dutch team is not (yet) known.
The practice match lasted two times 35 minutes. Ronald Koeman only brought in substitutes. The KNVB announced on Tuesday afternoon that Wednesday’s run-off training would be canceled for a practice match.
This allowed players who had played little or no action so far to gain match rhythm. Havelse was received at the AOK Stadium in Wolfsburg. The Dutch national team also conducts most of its training sessions there during the European Championship.
Koeman will use the coming days to get the group back together after Tuesday evening’s defeat against Austria. The Dutch team came back from behind twice, but still fell short (2-3) and therefore had to settle for third place in the group.
The result means there is a good chance that the Dutch will face a strong country in the round of 16, such as England or Belgium. Willem van Hanegem does not rule out that the Netherlands could be there again in the knockout phase, as he stated in his column for the Algemeen Dagblad.
The former midfielder believes that the internationals should be equally tough on each other in the coming days. “Weghorst is actually right when he says that the tournament is only really starting now. Now don’t start complaining about the atmosphere or being kind to each other. It may be grim for a few days. It’s top football.”
