Selected for Paris 2024, Edouard Roger-Vasselin will team up in doubles with Fabien Reboul. A choice that he explains by the FFT’s desire to ensure having a French pair in the Olympic tournament.

Edouard Roger-Vasselin will be there. Winner of the Roland-Garros mixed doubles tournament with Laura Siegemund, the Tricolore will be part of the French team that will be lined up at Paris 2024. However, due to his 13th place in the ATP ranking of the specialty, the native of Gennevilliers was not able to choose his partner and the FFT decided to associate him with Fabien Reboul for the tournament that will be organized on the clay of Roland-Garros. “It really happened at the last minute because, in relation to the administrative rules of the Olympic Games, there were several options,” he confided in an interview with Eurosport. The first was that I would be in the top ten in the world the day after Roland-Garros so that I could choose the partner I wanted. Unfortunately, I didn’t play well enough to be in the Top 10 at the end of Roland-Garros. I finished 13th, so I had no choice.” As for the choice to partner him with the current 33rd in the hierarchy, it is linked to the conditions of entry into the Olympic tournament. “To be sure of getting into the draw, we had estimated, with more or less sophisticated calculations, that we had to be in the 50-55, by combining the rankings of the two players, confided Edouard Roger-Vasselin. So that didn’t leave much choice.”

Roger-Vasselin would have liked to play with Mahut

Often associated with Nicolas Mahut, the Ile-de-France resident made no secret that his ambition was to find his partner during Paris 2024 but the results did not make it possible to achieve this. “In the rankings, Nico was 52nd in the world after Roland-Garros,” he recalls. So, by combining our two rankings, it was a huge risk that I already didn’t want to take, obviously, but that the federation didn’t want to take either so that we would be on the sidelines. » According to him, the logic of the association with Fabien Reboul is the desire of the FFT to have a doubles team entered for sure in Paris 2024. “We took the best ranked. It was Fabien Reboul or Sadio Doumbia, adds Edouard Roger-Vasselin. And also Fabrice Martin, who had a protected classification, which could allow us both to return. The other possibility was to play with a singles player with Gaël Monfils or Arthur Fils. Afterwards, in consultation between us and the federation, we decided that Fabien would be on paper, in any case, the best option. » Beyond men’s singles, Edouard Roger-Vasselin is also considering mixed doubles, a discipline for which he claims to have “a few references”. To this end, a name immediately comes to mind. “I have some references with Caroline Garcia too, so I would really like that to be that,” he says. The team, now, depending on each person’s form, we’ll see, but on paper, I hope that it will be confirmed. »
