The challenge at the top of Group A opens with a victory for UnipolSai Fortitudo: an exciting and hard-fought match takes place at Falchi, which the blue and whites bring home with a solid and determined performance. In the end San Marino lost 3-2, thus allowing the Bolognese, while awaiting the second and third matches, to reach the top of the group.
Manager Frignani chooses Eduar Lopez for the UnipolSai pitching mound, while Doriano Bindi entrusts the ball to Pedrol. The home team starts off strong: singles by Agretti and Paolini immediately bring traffic to the Titans’ bases, then the Fortitudo outfielder advances to third on a fielder’s choice after Martina’s hit; with runners at the corners, Samuele Gamberini’s hit puts the Sammarinese shortstop in difficulty: UnipolSai takes advantage of the error and puts the first run on the board with Agretti, before Martina is thrown out at home plate to close the inning. San Marino’s response is not long in coming: Alvarez walks and Celli doubles, to put two runners in the scoring zone with no outs. However, the Fortitudo defense takes center stage: first Lopez strikes out Tromp, then Helder with an incredible play, collects a foul fly by Pieternella to put two outs on the scoreboard and keep the runners on second and third. The San Marino reliever manages to keep Fortitudo’s bats at bay in two innings of work, and his attack tries to gain courage against Frank Herrera, who entered in the sixth to replace Lopez. Manager Bindi’s runners took advantage of a Fortitudo error to advance to second and third, before Pieternella’s long single to center. It is here, however, that the UnipolSai defense shows all its capabilities: Angulo scores from third, and Alvarez tries to do the same from second, but a perfect assist from Dobboletta allows Liberatore to eliminate him at the plate, putting an end to the ‘inning and maintaining the two-point lead for Bologna.
There is room for other emotions also in the upper part of the seventh round, when, with an out on the scoreboard, San Marino further closes the gap with Ferrini’s double which brings home Di Fabio: Fortitudo, however, does not allow the Titans to complete the comeback, because Herrera strikes out Diaz and Dobboletta quickly collects Angulo’s sprint to seal the UnipolSai Fortitudo victory 3-2.
Eduar Lopez gets the victory, who in 5 rounds concedes only 3 hits and 2 bases on balls, also collecting 4 strikeouts; salvation for Frank Herrera on his debut at Gianni Falchi in the blue and white jersey.
