It was a dramatic exit for Kylian Mbappé after he broke his nose at this European Championship. This in turn angered the Austrians, who accused the French superstar of a lack of fair play. They also feel disadvantaged by the referee.

Patrick Pentz tried to keep his composure, but Kylian Mbappé’s behavior really annoyed him. Especially since the Austrian goalkeeper had behaved very fairly towards the French superstar. When Mbappé was lying injured in the penalty area, the keeper went to him. He asked how he was feeling, worried. Mbappé had just hit Kevin Danso’s shoulder with his head in an aerial duel.

“I just saw that his face was covered in blood,” said Pentz. He then waved the French coaches onto the field, who then spent several minutes looking after Mbappé. As it later turned out, his nose was broken. “After I saw blood, I showed a fair attitude,” said Pentz: “Not like him!”

The keeper was referring to what happened next. After Mbappé received treatment, he left the field and walked along the sideline, supported by a coach. He was to be substituted. France’s coach Didier Deschamps had already prepared a double substitution, and the Austrians made their substitutions at the same time.

But referee Jesus Gil Manzano only allowed Rangnick’s team to make a substitution, while the French had to stand on the sidelines in amazement. Even when the ball went out of play for a throw-in shortly afterwards, the referee allowed play to continue – which really got France’s successful coach Didier Deschamps riled up.

In order to finally end the Frenchman’s numerical disadvantage and force a substitution, Mbappé went back onto the pitch without permission – only to fall down. He was shown a yellow card for this. “You don’t do that,” said Michael Ballack later, who was working as an expert for Magenta TV.

Even the French were surprised

But it was not only this action that angered the Austrians, who are under massive pressure after the 0:1 (0:1) defeat. They were even more upset by a scene that immediately preceded the French lead (own goal by Maximilian Wöber/38th minute). Christoph Baumgartner appeared completely free in front of Mike Maignan – but failed because the French keeper got his fingers on the ball and was able to direct it around the post. However, Gil Manzano recognized – even to the surprise of the French – a goal kick.

Ralf Rangnick said he did not know how the referee came to this decision. “Everyone should know: If the goalkeeper had not had the ball, the ball would have ended up in the goal,” said the Austrian coach.

Austria own goal and fuss about Mbappé – France’s opening victory in video

The French national team fought hard to win against Austria. An own goal by Wöber decided the match. In the final phase, the heavily bleeding French superstar Mbappé caused a great stir. The highlights in the video.

Rangnick was not very positive about Manzano’s refereeing of the game. He also criticised the apparently one-sided distribution of yellow cards. Only two French players were cautioned – but five Austrians were cautioned, who struggled to defend against the fast French attacking forces. “The game didn’t allow for this at all,” complained the former Bundesliga coach.
