EM 2024: Balaclavas and irritant spray – police send Hungary fans back

The federal police did not allow three Hungary fans to enter the country before the match against Germany in Stuttgart because they were considered violent. The three men were stopped at the border in Kirchdorf am Inn (Rottal-Inn district) on Wednesday and had to drive back to Austria, the federal police announced on Thursday.

The trio did not have tickets for the Hungarian national team’s European Championship match, but did have balaclavas, mouth guards and irritant spray. The corresponding patches indicated that the men belonged to the violent fan scene and “clearly did not have fair play in mind”. The trio was reported for violating the Bavarian assembly law.

16:02: UEFA bans TV reporter

After showing the controversial double-headed eagle gesture on the sidelines of the England vs. Serbia match, Kosovar TV reporter Arlind Sadiku was excluded from the European Championship by the European Football Union. On Thursday, UEFA confirmed in response to a dpa query that a journalist had been stripped of his accreditation for the European Championship due to misconduct. The umbrella organization did not disclose the person’s name or nationality.

The Swiss newspaper “Blick” had previously reported on the case. “It is a dangerous precedent,” Sadiku told the paper. “I did not insult or provoke anyone. I am simply proud of the symbol that represents us.”

14:40: Vogts sees DFB-Elf as “top favorite for the title”

The good start and the early entry into the round of 16 of the national football team have also convinced former national coach Berti Vogts. “The way the German team has played so far and what I have seen from the others, we are the top favorites for the title,” wrote the 77-year-old in his column for the “Rheinische Post” on Thursday.

“First there has to be someone who can beat us,” said Vogts, who had seemed skeptical before the tournament. “I certainly noticed a few things in the run-up to the European Championship when I looked at the national team, but now I am, like many, many of us, a fan.”

12.38 pm: Serbia threatens to withdraw

After hostile chants by Croatian and Albanian fans at the European Championships, Serbia lodged a complaint with UEFA and even suggested withdrawing from the tournament. “We are demanding sanctions from UEFA, even if this means not continuing the European Championship,” said the General Secretary of the Serbian Football Association, Jovan Surbatovic, on public broadcaster RTS in Serbia. UEFA was asked for a statement.

Surbatovic was referring to hostile chants such as “Kill the Serbs” from both fan camps in the second half of the 2-2 match between Croatia and Albania in Hamburg on Wednesday evening. “We will demand that UEFA punish the associations of both teams. We do not want to be involved in this, but if UEFA does not punish them, we will consider how to proceed,” the general secretary continued.

Surbatovic explained that his own association had been “punished for individual cases,” “and our fans behaved much better than the others. One fan was punished for racist insults and we do not want this to be applied to others. We Serbs are gentlemen and open-hearted, so I appeal to the fans to remain gentlemen.” UEFA has already fined the Serbian and Albanian associations 10,000 euros each for provocative messages from fans at the European Championships.

04:10 a.m.: Portuguese police officer catches thieves in Leipzig

As part of the European Championships, police officers from participating countries are also being deployed in Germany to support the federal police – and rightly so, as it turns out. A Portuguese police officer in Leipzig caught a pickpocket he knew. He caught him red-handed. The officer recognized the 48-year-old Romanian in the main train station and pursued him together with his German colleagues, the federal police announced on Wednesday. They observed him tampering with a traveler’s backpack.

21:10: Shaw’s comeback postponed again

Luke Shaw hasn’t worn the Three Lions’ jersey for a long time – and the break continues for now. The 28-year-old left-back from Manchester United is not yet ready for the second group match against Denmark on Thursday (6 p.m./ZDF and MagentaTV), for which a comeback was targeted. Coach Gareth Southgate said this on Wednesday in Frankfurt.

“Luke will not be there. We thought it might be quicker. He needs a bit more volume, he didn’t train with the boys today. He is also doing his individual program,” said Southgate in the press conference. The defensive player was the only professional who was unable to take part in the final training session.

Due to various muscle injuries, Shaw has missed almost the entire season. He has not played in a game since mid-February.
