Hungary can dream of reaching the round of 16, but fears for striker Varga

Thanks to Kevin Csoboth, the Hungarian national football team is dreaming of progressing. However, the 1-0 win against Scotland, achieved late in injury time, was overshadowed by a medical intervention, as a result of which Barnabás Varga had to be transported out of the stadium under a screen.

Hungarian striker Barnabas Varga was carried off the pitch by paramedics during the match against Scotland. The 29-year-old fell to the ground after a collision and suffered several broken bones. Some players cried. Hungary’s captain criticized the first responders.

A worrying incident occurred on Sunday evening in the European Championship match between Hungary and Scotland in Germany’s Group A. After a Hungarian free kick in the middle of the second half, Hungarian striker Barnabas Varga remained motionless on the ground. Players shielded the 29-year-old.

Nothing was initially known about his health. Immediately after Hungary’s late 1-0 victory, however, the Hungarian association gave the all-clear. The player was responsive and on his way to the hospital. Half an hour after the game, Vargas’s coach announced that his player had broken his cheekbone.

While the Hungarian team still has hopes of reaching the round of 16, the European Championship is over for Varga. That’s what coach Marco Rossi said after the 1-0 victory over the Scots. Varga suffered a concussion and several facial fractures and will most likely need surgery, it was said in another post by the association on the X platform on Monday night.

What initially looked like a nasty collision with Scottish goalkeeper Angus Gunn seemed to have caused cramps in the Hungarian for other reasons. After the free kick cross, Vargas’s posture had already changed in the air – apparently without much contact.

His worried teammates immediately called for help and carefully moved him to the side. Stewards then quickly covered the scene of the accident with blankets to protect it from view.

“I was one of the first to get there. I was very shocked and tried to lay him on his side. He wanted to try to stand up. But he couldn’t get enough air. We told him to stay lying down,” said captain Dominik Szoboszlai later, criticizing the speed of the emergency services: “I’m not in a position to decide that, but that wasn’t good. We have to do it faster, much faster. Every second counts.” He was obviously aware of that on the pitch.

“I have no idea what the protocol is, whether people are not allowed to run onto the pitch if we need help. (…) We have to change that,” the Hungarian continued. Immediately after the accident, the former Leipzig player could be seen snatching the stretcher from the hands of one of the helpers in order to get it to his teammate more quickly.

The paramedics then put the player on a stretcher and immediately transported him out of the stadium to the applause of Scottish and Hungarian fans. The injured player was not recognizable. His number 19 shirt was the center of attention during the celebrations after the final whistle.

Remembering Eriksen

Many spectators were shocked. Some teammates, such as Liverpool’s Szoboszlai, had tears in their eyes. The scene was reminiscent of the Dane Christian Eriksen, who was left lying on the pitch after suffering a cardiac arrest at the 2021 European Championship.

When the match restarted shortly afterwards, there were whistles at first, probably because of the decision to continue the match without a break and knowing the player’s health. Varga had scored Hungary’s only goal of the tournament in the 1:3 defeat against Switzerland. He is under contract with Ferencvaros Budapest. The European Championship is probably over for him. His team, on the other hand, can hope for at least one more game.
