EM 2024: Individual review – Three times grade 5 for the German national team

Thanks to Niclas Füllkrug, the German national team avoided its first defeat at the European Championships and secured group victory. Coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team played 1:1 (0:1) against Switzerland in Frankfurt on Sunday evening after falling behind, thus finishing the preliminary round in first place with seven points. The Swiss are second with five points. In front of 47,000 spectators, substitute Füllkrug (90th + 2nd minute) countered Dan Ndoye’s opening goal very late. A goal by Robert Andrich (17th) had previously been disallowed via video evidence.

Germany will play its round of 16 match on Saturday (9 p.m., in the WELT sports ticker) in Dortmund. Possible opponents are England, Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia. The decision about the opponent in the first knockout round will be made on Tuesday evening (9 p.m.) in the preliminary round final of Group C. But the DFB team will have to improve to achieve this, as the duel against Switzerland showed. Individual reviews of the German players.

Manuel Neuer: The goalkeeper has been Germany’s new European Championship record player since Sunday. The 38-year-old, who replaced Bastian Schweinsteiger, played his 18th European Championship match against Switzerland. At the same time, Neuer overtook the Italian Gianluigi Buffon and is now the sole record goalkeeper at European Championships. The Munich player was initially unemployed. When the Swiss first came dangerously close to his goal, he was powerless to stop Ndoye’s shot to make it 0-1 (30′). Neuer hardly had to intervene after that; when there was something to save, he was there. Strong save from Xhaka’s shot shortly before the end. Note 3

Rüdiger threatens to miss the round of 16

Joshua Kimmich: The right-back was committed, but he looked unlucky when he tried to clear Rieder before the Swiss opened the scoring, as the ball bounced away from him. Before half-time, he had the best tackle rate in the German team at 100 percent. After the break, Kimmich tried to apply pressure on the right, but he was often not precise or focused enough, which was not necessary. Note 4

Antonio Rüdiger: The central defender did not play as confidently as we are used to from him. Just a minute after the 0-1, he lost a running duel with goalscorer Ndoye, whose shot whizzed just wide of the goal. Four minutes before half-time, the Real Madrid defensive star missed a good chance to equalize when he headed the ball wide from a Kroos cross. Overall, he did not seem as confident as usual, and the ball slipped away from him time and time again. In the end, he was lucky that Vargas’s goal was ruled offside when it appeared he would have made it 0-2. Another disappointment: He could miss the round of 16. There is a suspicion of a thigh injury. Note 4

Jonathan Tahl: The Leverkusen player will be absent from the round of 16: After a foul on Embolo (37th minute), he received his second yellow card of the tournament, which means he will have to watch Saturday’s game in Dortmund. Like Rüdiger, he was not as present this time. After the break, he was in danger of receiving a yellow-red card, so the national coach took him off the field early in the 61st minute. He should have acted much more cleverly given his impending suspension. Note 5

Maximilian Mittelstädt: The Stuttgart player was one of the most committed players in the German team in the early stages. Since the Swiss had closed off the center, a lot of the play went out on the wings – including on the left. However hard the 27-year-old tried, he often lacked the necessary precision in the end. Crosses missed his teammates several times. The chain of errors did not stop after the break, and he also underestimated a few balls. In the 61st minute, the national coach relieved him and made room for him. Note 5

Robert Andrich: Unfortunately for the defensive midfielder, his supposed first goal in his eighth international match was disallowed. After a VAR check, a foul by Musiala on Aebischer before Andrich’s shot was penalized. The Leverkusen player, who had already received a yellow card, played very far back this time, sometimes joining the back four between the central defenders. Overall, not as energetic a performance as we would normally expect from him. Note 4

Toni Kroos: In his third European Championship game, he did not quite manage to give the German team the stability it needed. Although he again had the most ball contacts (64 in the first 45 minutes alone), not every ball found its intended recipient against Switzerland. Since the Swiss defended the middle well, Kroos often had to play out wide. In the 55th minute, he missed a good shot opportunity to make it 1-1. Note 4

Jamal Musiala: Grade 1 against Scotland, grade 1 against Hungary – and he started furiously again against Switzerland. There was a murmur in the stands when the Munich player rounded Freuler like a flagpole in the second minute and ran towards the Swiss goal. But Schär caught his through ball to Gündogan. The Munich player was once again one of the most conspicuous players in the German team, setting up four shots on goal before the break alone. But he lost the ball before the 0-1. Note 3

Ilkay Gundogan: In his 80th international match, he put in another good performance, although not as brilliant as in the first two games at this European Championship. But Gündogan played with great commitment and directed a lot of the offensive. But his game was not nearly as effective, even though he kept pushing his teammates, even in pressing situations. In the final phase, he played much more defensively after Andrich was substituted. Note 3

Florian Wirtz: After his great opening match against Scotland, he had not played so conspicuously against Hungary. The young Bayer Leverkusen star also failed to live up to expectations against Switzerland. The 21-year-old was not involved in any finishing moves before half-time. He did improve a little after the break, but overall the game passed him by. Note 5

Kai Havertz: The Arsenal striker had three shots on goal before half-time – the most of any German team. Havertz had a tough time against the very solidly defending Swiss, so he dropped from the center to the right. He repeatedly used his body well, but was unlucky that he was hardly put in the spotlight. In the 68th minute, he headed just over the crossbar. All in all, a very unlucky performance. Note: 4
