The German national team will play its round of 16 match in Dortmund next Saturday. Until then, the players will be watching the tournament at the European Championship headquarters in Herzogenaurach. However, this could be more stressful than hoped for the national team due to a plague of mosquitoes.

On Monday night, the German national football team returned to its European Championship quarters in Herzogenaurach. The players’ wives and girlfriends were also allowed to return to the Adidas facility after the 1:1 (0:1) draw against Switzerland in Frankfurt/Main in the third and final group match.

The quarters are a retreat for the team led by captain İlkay Gündoğan. There is a pool and a lounge, and the players like to watch the games of the other teams and future opponents on a large video wall.

It will probably be the same on Monday and Tuesday, especially since Tuesday will decide who the Germans will face in the round of 16. It could be Denmark, Slovenia or England, and the national team’s match in the round of 16 will take place on Saturday (9 p.m., ZDF and MagentaTV) in Dortmund.

Watching the other games could be less relaxing than hoped. National coach Julian Nagelsmann said at the press conference after the 1:1 draw on Sunday evening: “We have a terrible plague of mosquitoes. We have to make sure there is some wind, that there aren’t so many mosquitoes. If not, we have to go to the office.” The coaching team has its own rooms in the “Homeground”, as the quarters are called.
