The fan miles in many German cities will attract a lot of fans to the home European Championships. Are you allowed to bring beer and the old vuvuzela? And what about pyrotechnics? An overview of the rules.

The giant screens are already ready: The European Football Championship starts on Friday with the opening match between Germany and Scotland. The official UEFA fan miles in cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich are expecting a large crowd. What rules apply to fans at public viewings? An overview.

Can I take my bag with me?

Basically, bags are allowed – including bum bags, jute bags or backpacks – that are no larger than DIN A4 format. In Hamburg, according to the organizers, bags up to A3 size can be brought along. However, the organizers in the Olympic Park in Munich advise leaving backpacks and the like at home. In Berlin, fans can bring their own food as long as it fits in the small bags.

What do I need to consider when making my own drinks?

When it comes to drinks, some cities also have special rules. But one thing is the same so far: alcohol and glass bottles are not allowed. Depending on the city, fans can pack non-alcoholic drinks such as water or soft drinks in plastic containers, but only in certain quantities. The exact amount that can be taken is stated on the respective city information pages. Fans can buy drinks such as beer or wine spritzers on the grounds themselves, and there are also several food stands available. The organizers also offer free drinking water.

What has to stay at home?

The fan mile has set up a whole series of bans. For example, smoking weed is not allowed. Weapons, knives, pyrotechnics, laser pointers or spray cans are also not allowed. According to the organizers, bulky items such as umbrellas, chairs, bicycles or e-scooters do not belong on the site.

“Mechanical and electrically operated noise instruments” such as megaphones and musical instruments should be left at home. Some cities specifically point out that vuvuzelas are also prohibited. In Berlin, fans must be careful not to take flags on poles with them; in other cities, flag or banner poles are only allowed up to a certain length or diameter.

What else do I need to consider when entering?

In general, it is worth taking a look at the rules for the respective fan miles in the cities before visiting. In principle, you can get in for free and without a ticket. Because of bag and identity checks, the organizers warn of long waiting times and advise fans to come early – and of course to follow the rules.
