A strange incident is keeping the Dortmund police busy around the round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark. A 21-year-old climbed onto the roof of the stadium and was arrested after the final whistle. A helicopter was deployed.

When the second half of the eventful round of 16 match between Germany and Denmark was about to begin, referee Michael Oliver was initially unable to blow the whistle. He called the captains of both teams over and spoke to İlkay Gündoğan and Kasper Schmeichel at the halfway line.

The trio kept looking up towards the roof of the Dortmund Arena. The reason for this remained unclear until the final whistle of the match, which Germany won 2-0.

After the game, it emerged that an initially unknown man had climbed onto the roof of the Westfalenstadion during the match in Dortmund and had to be brought down by the police. The climber was a 21-year-old from Osnabrück, the police announced on Sunday morning. The man was arrested. So far, there is no evidence that the 21-year-old wanted to endanger the stadium visitors, they said.

Emergency services approached the man in the stadium and spoke to him. A helicopter also illuminated the stadium roof. At no point was there any danger to other people.

According to police reports, the unknown man had already reached the roof of the stadium at 10:27 p.m. The police were initially unable to provide any information about his motive or the man’s identity. It was also initially unclear how he got onto the roof.
