Embracing Nature: Shijiazhuang City’s Transformation with Shared Green Spaces

The sky is the table and the ground is the chair, and the shared green space becomes an “environmental protection classroom”.

In the Shiyun shared green space of Donghuan Park, a series of shared green space theme activities are being staged, including “Practicing new fashion, volunteering for classification” popular science education on household waste classification, DIY tree stump graffiti, plant leaf rubbing and dyeing, making plant aromatherapy and other contents.

“In the park, I got to know a lot of interesting plants, and I also learned that scientific processing of recyclable resources can turn waste into treasure and reduce environmental pollution.” The combination of beautiful scenery and popular science made Wang Zihe linger.

Laying a mat and reading a book in the shared green space of Shijin Irrigation Canal Cultural Park is one of the ways for Gao Haiyue, a resident, to relax in her busy life. This shared green space of about 20,000 square meters has attracted many citizens to come for leisure and recreation. “Looking up, I see the blue sky and white clouds, and I hear the wind and the sounds of nature. It feels very comfortable to read a book here,” Gao Haiyue said with a smile.

Outside, you will see the hustle and bustle; inside, you will see nature. This is the enjoyment that the shared green spaces throughout the city bring to people.

In 2023, Hebei Province will comprehensively promote the opening and sharing of urban green spaces, demarcate open and shared areas in park lawns, forest spaces, and vacant land, and improve supporting service facilities to better meet the people’s needs for outdoor activities close to nature, such as setting up tents, exercising and fitness, and leisure and recreation.

In response to this, Shijiazhuang City quickly changed its concept and put “open sharing” into action. It opened up the space under the trees, removed the lawn fences, and opened 953 green spaces with a total area of 4.0798 million square meters to the public. It also formulated a “one park, one policy” management and maintenance plan, scientifically formulated rules for the rotation of open green spaces, and added seats, trash cans, flexible signboards and other infrastructure to meet the public’s green needs.

Not long ago, in the shared green space of the Sports Park, two newlyweds in wedding dresses walked hand in hand on the lawns and landscape features of the park, leaving their beautiful images.

On summer evenings, on the shared green space in the heart of the city, groups of students, who have walked out of the sea of books and homework, sit on the lawn, either meditating with their eyes closed to empty their minds; or chatting and communicating with each other; or running around happily, flying kites, and playing badminton… They enjoy the outdoor decompression method of “green space + sports”, relieving anxiety and releasing stress.

Every weekend, the shared green space at the foot of Wohu Mountain by the Taiping River becomes a bustling camping base. Colorful tents are scattered on the grass like stars, and small windmills of various colors are spinning in the breeze. Adults are smiling and children are dancing, which contrasts with the river and forms a beautiful ecological picture.

This is a microcosm of our city’s exploration of a new model of shared green space.

“In order to better adapt to the new situation and new requirements of open and shared green spaces, our city has devoted itself to creating eight high-quality demonstration sites for open and shared green spaces. Each site has set themes such as ‘bride’, ‘sports’ and ‘water-friendly’ in combination with its own landscape characteristics. We have also carefully planned a variety of themed activities to showcase the rich functions of open and shared green spaces, allowing everyone to fully enjoy the comfort of being integrated into nature.” said Zhang Yilian, deputy chief of the Park Section of the Municipal Bureau of Landscape Architecture.

With large open green spaces and tree-lined areas, families chatting and playing on the lawn and strolling under the shade of trees have become a new normal for citizens to enjoy a better life. Next, our city will continue to improve the level of urban greening, create more garden application scenarios with more beautiful landscapes, more intimate services, and richer functions, and gradually turn the vision of a green, ecological and livable city into reality.
