Emma, how are you feeling so close to the season highlight in Wimbledon?
“The preparation is going quite well, thank you. I trained well for a few days in London and am playing in Eastbourne this week.”

How excited are you about Wimbledon? What are you most looking forward to?
“What I’m most looking forward to is playing at Wimbledon again this year. Unfortunately, I missed it last year. Now I’m looking forward to coming back and hopefully playing better than I did in 2022.”

What is the fascination of Wimbledon for you?
“For me, it’s the great history and tradition, like the immaculate grass courts and the dress code with the iconic white. Wimbledon is the tournament that every player dreams of winning.”

You made a successful start to the grass court season with the semi-final in Nottingham. How good was your performance for your confidence ahead of Wimbledon?
“I took a lot of positives from Nottingham. I played well. That showed me how good my game is on grass. It’s a good feeling that I’m taking with me to Wimbledon. The most important thing for me, however, is that Wimbledon is a place where I feel my love for tennis. But no matter how things go for me there, I have a lot of faith in myself for the years ahead.”

Before Wimbledon you will play the Eastbourne tournament. Do you think you will be optimally prepared after that?
“I’ve never played in Eastbourne before. It’s another home tournament for me, playing in front of my British fans. That’s the best thing about it.”

You celebrated your first Grand Slam triumph at the US Open on a hard court. Why do you like playing on grass so much?
“I simply love grass and I think that’s true for most British players. I’ve always said that grass and hard courts are my favourite surfaces as they suit my game best. Clay courts and I are still working on our relationship.”

What is so special about grass tennis and what does it mean to you as a Brit to play at Wimbledon?
“The courts at Wimbledon are obviously immaculate and look wonderful. The aesthetics and tradition of this tournament are unmatched. Being a British player on the court at Wimbledon is incredible. The atmosphere is hard to put into words. I prefer playing on Court 1 because the fans are very close to the action there. This proximity and everything else that makes Wimbledon special gives me extra motivation to play well.”

The last British Wimbledon winner was Virginia Wade in 1977. Have you ever met her? What did you talk about?
“Yes, I met Virginia. She told me how I played in the match she was watching. It was a great experience.”
