Emma Raducanu’s Sporty Triumph: Beating Pegula and Defending Her Decision

Emma Raducanu is slowly climbing back towards the top of women’s tennis. In Eastbourne, she was able to defeat the second-seeded American Jessica Pegula in three sets with 4:6, 7:6 (5), 7:5 – the 21-year-old Brit even fended off a match point in the second set. In the previous round, she had already defeated Pegula’s compatriot Sloane Stephens with 6:4, 6:0.

Emma Raducanu relies on her “independence”

However, her upward sporting trend is also being counteracted by criticism of her decision not to take part in the Olympic Games in Paris. Raducanu justified her decision not to take part in the Olympic Games by saying that she believes the risk of injury would be too high if she were to change surfaces so often in a short space of time.

On her decision not to compete for Great Britain in Paris, Raducanu said in Eastbourne: “I’m going to do things in my own time. I’m not in a hurry to do anything and everything I do and play now is for me,” Raducanu said – adding: “I’m just even more focused on my own career and less receptive to outside opinions or views. I just enjoy doing everything for myself and being really independent out here. Even though it will be questioned that I’m not playing certain tournaments like the French Open or the Olympics, it’s just part of doing things at my own pace and the way I want to do them, and not the way everyone else thinks is best for me.”

And at the moment, Emma Raducanu seems to be on the right track with this strategy.
